The Grading

System

First half of term

At the start of the term it is important that the students learn to listen to the coach and focus on what is being taught. They are told that after half term the coach will not be explaining the moves anymore and will just expect them to know after 6-8 weeks of repetition.

Moves are slowly introduced week by week, and each move is repeated at least 3 times over 3 different weeks.

Half term break

Students get a chance to rest. Which is good for both the body and the ability to absorb new information.

Second half of term

The main focus of the second half of the term is to develop the student’s ability to train themselves in the moves that they were taught in the first half of the term.

The coach explains and demonstrates the moves less and less, forcing the students to let go of their dependence on continual encouragement, instead they must push themselves.

If the students were not focused in the first 6-8 weeks they will likely struggle in this part. It is the first lesson for them to realize the value of listening and focusing in class.

Grading Day (Second to last week of term)

Students have an hour to perform all the moves they learnt since the start of term without any demonstration from the coach.

Students should by this point know most of the moves and have been prepared for grading through the second half of the term. During the grading, the students are required to carefully listen to what the coach is asking them to perform.

The class has no music and the students are asked to perform the grading in silence (similar to an exam) which added to the distinction and importance that the students place on this session.

The Week After Grading

The last class is normally an open gym session or celebration that acts as a pressure reliever. Just to have a day of fun where the students get to do whatever they want.

If students fail then it is a chance for the student to reconsider their approach to the class. Often students return with a new level of focus at the start of the next term, and a stronger drive to improve. It is also a chance to develop a positive relationship to failure, rather than quitting if they fail they can ‘get back on the horse’ and try again.

If the student passes, They tend to have a greater sense of confidence in their own ability to learn without constant encouragement from the coach. They develop internal drive rather than a dependence on external encouragement.

Week of Contemplation & Self-reflection

Wait a week before they find out how they did, this gives them time to reflect on their performance and how well they did throughout the term.

Typically, students pay more attention to the feedback after a week of self-reflection.
